Rocks

When we first looked at our house we got the impression that the previous owner didn't like grass. Maybe not the grass itself, but the upkeep of it at least. We got this impression from the variety of rocks in the back yard and on the side of the driveway.

While landscaping rocks can be beautiful and when arranged nicely are very pleasing to the eye, getting out of the vehicle and stepping IN the landscaping rocks isn't a lot of fun. So we began to remove the rocks on the side of the driveway. We discovered that the plants that had been placed there years ago and allowed to grow had done just that. Their roots ran deep. One ivy-type plant had been placed in a large pedestal pot near the road. This plant grew up and over the wire "structure" in the pot and then back down all around the pot. It grew so thick and full that it grew back INTO the ground under the pot! It looked like a green version of "Cousin It!!"

With A LOT of cutting, pulling, pushing, yanking and shoveling, "Cousin It" no longer lives here. The remaining plants were cut away and then removed last weekend when Ken used the machine he rented on them. He rented a front-end loader thingy that you can walk behind. He cleared the whole side of the driveway! Now there is a very large pile of rock in front of the shed.

While he had the machine he decided to move some of the general gray stones from the backyard just behind the house. Our intention is to clear some land for some sod. We feel that planting grass seed with the kind of shade we have isn't going to produce the kind of grass we want. So he moved rocks. He went down nearly a foot and STILL there was more rock! Now there is a VERY large pile of rock BEHIND the shed!

Tomorrow the Davis family will be bonding with each other and shovels and a wheelbarrel. There are some places in the backyard that can use a little more rock to level out some bare spots. We will attempt to make a dent in the piles.
